The CoE Region VIII Demonstration Projects

National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health Region VIII Demonstration Projects

University of Utah Health Sciences Center

The University of Utah Health Sciences Center (UUHSC) in Salt Lake City was awarded a Region VIII National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health (CoE) Demonstration Project contract in September 2005. The CoE program implements a national model for comprehensive, integrated, multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches to women's health care. While there are many educational resources, services and research facilities available in women's health at UUHSC, there is a need for a collaborative and integrated program. The UUHSC is the only academic medical center in the Intermountain West, an area inhabited by 5 million people that encompasses the states of Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, sections of eastern Nevada, and northern Arizona. Utah has unique minority populations which have increased at an accelerated rate. Under this CoE Demonstration Project, the CoE Region VIII Demonstration Center Director, Kathleen Digre, M.D., proposes to lead the coordination of promotion and retention of women faculty, advancement of professional education, improvement in community outreach and education, advancement of and access to clinical services and improved women's health research for the women who reside in Utah and environs.

University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences

The University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences (UNDSMHS) in partnership with Altru Health System was selected as a National Center of Excellence (CoE) in Women's Health Region VIII Demonstration Project in September 2004. In order to best express our commitment to the women of North Dakota, we have entitled the project the North Dakota Women's Health CORE (Clinical, Outreach, Research, Education). The CORE strives for an integrated model of health care, bringing together four key areas (CORE) into a single setting. The ideal clinical concept is a one-stop shop for women's health care integrated with the other components. CORE is also working to develop leadership of women in academic medicine through the promotion and retention of women faculty by establishing a strong faculty mentorship program.

The CORE will focus on the needs of women of all ages, with particular emphasis toward women in rural areas as well as the needs of diverse populations, especially Native American women.
