The V-Site Restoration Project preserved an endangered key site involved in the World War II-era Manhattan Project, the effort that resulted in creation of the world’s first atomic weapons during a desperate rush to develop them before the Axis Powers (Germany, Japan, Italy) could do so. The joint Advisory Council on Historic Preservation/National Trust for Historic Preservation Award for Federal Partnerships in Historic Preservation was presented during the National Trust’s annual conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
