Ricardo de la Espriella Toral has occupied the highest posts of Panama’s Executive Branch as Vice-President of the Republic of Panama from 1978 to 1982, and its President from 1982 to 1984.

He graduated from the Panama National Institute and studied at the University of Panama.  He was awarded a Doctor’s Degree Honoris Causa from Florida State University, and was Associate Professor of the International Relations School of the University of Miami.

Mr. de la Espriella has held other important posts such as Administrative Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Credit Manager of Banco de Crédito Popular bank, General Manager of Primer Banco de Ahorros savings bank, General Manager of Caja de Ahorros de Panamá savings bank, and General Manager of the Panama National Bank.  In addition, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the following Government agencies of the Republic of Panama: Institute for Hydraulic Resources and Electrification, National Mortgage Bank, National Communications Institute, Panama Social Security, National Banking Commission, and National Communications Institute.  He has also been a member of the National Securities Commission, Panama’s Representative to the International Monetary Fund, Chairman of the Economic Council, and Chairman of the National Finance Commission.

Since 1985 to date, he has been President of Ret Corporation Inc., an investment consultant and promotion firm.

He was sworn in as a member of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) Board of Directors for a period of nine years beginning on July 9, 2007.
