Product Description

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observations and Science (EROS) has archived thousands of rolls of film containing several million frames of historical aerial and satellite photographs dating back to the 1930's gathered from various Federal agencies. This archive includes the rather well known, often utilized NHAP and NAPP film, but the largest portion of this archive consists of original film acquired in support of the USGS 1:24,000 topographic quadrangle map series, taken during the 1940s through the 1970s. Most of this photography is reasonably large scale to support the production of the quadrangle maps.

USGS EROS has implemented a medium-resolution digital product. The medium-resolution files are created at approximately 600 dpi with an output image size of around five inches square. The file sizes are approximately 15 megabytes for black and white images and 45 megabytes for color images. The files are stored in a TIFF format. The medium-resolution files are produced using a digital camera system with ADOBE Photoshop software.

Search & Order

Medium Resolution Digitized products can be searched and ordered on Earth Explorer for USGS agency collections. The current priority for generating browse and medium resolution products from the USGS/EDC archive is the National Aerial Photography Program (NAPP). Currently Earth Explorer can be utilized for ordering images that have been digitized to date, or for requesting the digitization of NAPP rolls that have not been previously digitized.

After all NAPP rolls have been digitized, other USGS agency collections (including NHAP, USGS Survey Photography, and USGS Index/Mapping Photography) will be completed. Other collections outside USGS agencies will then follow. Until this time, all film source collections are available as a High Resolution Scanned product.
