Summary:
Clinical experience and empirical research indicate the crucial importance of the treatment relationship during the course of psychotherapy. Evidence increasingly suggests that the quality of the therapeutic alliance is the single most important factor in a favorable treatment outcome. In order to further theoretical understanding and effective practices in the amelioration of eating disorders, the 2008 Renfrew Center Foundation Conference is devoted to an examination of therapeutic relationships. Presentations are broad-based, to illuminate and explore the whole range of interpersonal qualities and connections that contribute to recovery. Prominent themes include therapist and patient characteristics that enhance the treatment relationship, types of interventions that promote the therapeutic alliance, factors which undermine therapeutic connection and ways to enable the therapeutic impact of the patient’s relationship with family and friends.
