States, Territories, Associated Areas of the United States -- File Format

Note: The NationalFile and AllState .zip files contain two text files: 1) Alaska and Hawaii in Unicode text format to accommodate native special characters, and 2) all others in text format.

Topical Gazetteers -- File Format

  • Populated Places – Named features with human habitation—cities, towns, villages, etc. (Revised 09/03/08)
  • Historical Features – Features that no longer exist on the landscape.
  • Concise Features – Large features that should be labeled on maps with a scale of 1:250,000.
  • All Names – All names, both official and nonofficial (variant), for all features in the nation.
  • Antarctica Features – Features in Antarctica approved for use by the US government. (Revised 10/20/08)
  • Government Units – Full official names, alphabetic, and numeric codes of states and counties (Reference FIPS 6-4)

State Files with Federal Codes -- File Format

Important Notice: These files include the former Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 55 Place Codes and Class Codes associated with their respective GNIS Feature IDs. The FIPS 55-3 standard has been withdrawn and the FIPS55 data have been incorporated into the GNIS. See FIPS 55 Change Notice. The GNIS Feature ID superseded the former FIPS55 Place Code (now referred to as the Census Code) as the Federal standard geographic feature record identifier. The Feature ID also is included in a proposed ANSI standard, which is currently in final approval, and will replace the former FIPS55 Standard. The Census Bureau continues to assign five digit Census codes for internal purposes and will maintain the Class Codes indefinitely (Class Code Definitions). The Census and Class codes will continue to be available in these files and in the GNIS Federal Codes search site. In addition, General Services Administration Geographic Location Codes and Office of Personnel Management Duty Station Codes will be added to these files in 2008. (Note: FIPS 6-4 State and county codes are separate codes and are NOT affected by this change.) Legacy systems are highly encouraged to convert to the Feature ID as soon as possible.

Note: The NationalFedCodes and AllStateFedCodes .zip files contain two text files: 1) Alaska and Hawaii in Unicode text format to accommodate native special characters, and 2) all others in text format.
