Miami Subdistrict Chief Selected

We are pleased to announce the selection of Maria M. Irizarry as Chief of the Miami Subdistrict in Florida. Maria (Maggie) currently is the Associate District Chief in Puerto Rico.

Maggie began her career in 1973 as a chemical engineer with Region II of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1978, she transferred to EPA headquarters in Washington, D.C. where she served in both the Effluent Guidelines and Industrial Technology Divisions and was responsible for developing point source effluent standards for organic chemicals and non-ferrous metals. She also conducted evaluations on which to base regulations to control industrial discharge of these materials.

In 1985, Maggie accepted an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) appointment in San Juan as EPA's representative and advisor to the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA), the island's large water-supply and resource-management agency. In 1988, she joined the USGS and accepted another IPA assignment to PRASA to plan and coordinate jointly funded water-resource programs.

Maggie served as Executive Director of PRASA from 1989 to 1992 where she instituted significant changes to improve agency effectiveness in delivering water and sewer services to all of Puerto Rico. From 1993, she has served the Puerto Rico District in several management positions. Maggie holds a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is a registered Professional Engineer.

Maggie's technical and managerial background is well suited for leading the Miami Subdistrict's hydrologic and related science programs in south Florida. She will assume her new duties this summer. Please join us in welcoming Maggie to this challenging new phase of her career.
