USGS Exhibit for Earth Science Week

We will be hosting a display of USGS activities in Florida at the Leon County main library in Tallahassee from Saturday, October 7, through Sunday, October 15. The display will include photos, publications and products and will direct interested people upstairs to a computer, where they can access the Geomedia CD for some interactive educational fun. Next to the computer will be a table of outreach-oriented Florida publications related to: sinkholes, springs, lakes, the South Florida Ecosystem studies, and USGS activities in Florida.

Earth Science Week Activities in St. Petersburg, Florida

To celebrate Earth Science Week, the Center for Coastal Geology and Regional Marine Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida, is planning two events for the public. On October 10th, an open house will be held. Tours of the U.S. Geological Survey's Studebaker and Getting Buildings will be offered from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be hands-on activities, scientists discussing their research, and displays featuring how African dust may affect our health, how to use a SHARQ to measure coral health, sounds made by a coral reef, native fishes, volcanoes, wetlands, sand, maps, and much more.

On October 11th, we will host tours of the Center for approximately 550 Pinellas County fourth grade students. We want to focus on fourth graders because this is when the school curriculum introduces Earth Science. The students will participate in hands-on science activities and scientists will give presentations geared to young audiences on African dust, corals, reef sounds, native fishes, volcanoes, wetlands, sand, maps, and more. The students will be given goodie bags containing USGS materials designed for children. Teachers will be given goodie bags containing USGS materials designed to help teach earth science.
