Eastern Plains Region
The Eastern Plains Region is a physiographic province extending from the
Appalachian Basin on the east, Great Lakes on the north, and the Iowa,
Missouri, and Arkansas borders on the west. Northern portions of the
eastern plains are located on the stable continental core and have been
minimally impacted for over a billion years. Eastern and southern portions
of the region have been influenced by the development and subsequent
erosion and sedimentation of the Appalachian and Ozark/Ouchita Mountains.
Glaciers added the final touches in the region, leaving thin deposits of
loess and numerous outwash and glacial landforms. The region is drained by
the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and Great Lakes; each providing significant
impact to the economy of the region.
Abundant amounts of oil, gas, and
coal resources exist in the region and are produced in the Michigan,
Illinois, Black Warrior Basins and portions of the Cincinnati Arch area in
Kentucky. This web site provides access to the Energy Resources Program
research activities and products within the Eastern Plains Region.

In the Illinois Basin, coal-bearing rocks of Pennsylvanian
age underlie most of Illinois (36,800 mi2), and parts of southwestern
Indiana (6,500 mi2) and northwestern Kentucky (6,400 mi2). Rocks of Pennsylvanian age were formed between
about 325 and 290 million years before present.
