MODIS/Terra+Aqua Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectance 16-Day L3 Global 1km SIN Grid V005
MCD43B4
Unlike MODIS V004 MOD43, the V005 BRDF, Albedo, and NBAR products are known as MCD43. Whenever possible, both Terra and Aqua data are used in the generation of the new V005 products, providing the highest probability for quality input data and designating them as "MCD," meaning "Combined," products.
Top Left: A combination of Bands 1, 4, 3 displays an R, G, B Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectance image using data acquired between January 17 and February 1, 2007 over the Adriatic Sea, including Italy, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, and Albania (h19v04).
Black pixels are either clouds (top) or water bodies (bottom). White pixels represent snow, as determined using BRDF/Albedo Quality
Top Right: A zoomed view of the 1-km data extending through the spur of Italy.
V005 Change Points of Interest
1-km and 500-m products now available: the 1-km are averages of the 500-m values (if any of the input 500-m pixels were snow-covered the 1-km is flagged as snowy)
3D Science Data Sets simplified to 2D structure
Quality information stored as a separate product (MCD43B2)
Solar Zenith Angle changed from mean to angle at local solar noon
Reduced file volume: internal compression
Phased production strategy: Produced every 8 days with 16-days of acquisition (ie., production period 2001001 includes acquisition between Days 001 and 016, production period 2001009 includes acquisition between Days 009 and 024)
Product Description
The MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Nadir BRDF Adjusted Reflectance (NBAR) product MCD43B4 provides 1-kilometer reflectance data adjusted using the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of MCD43B1 to model values as if they were acquired from a nadir view. MCD43B4 reflectance represents that best characterization of the surface possible from the inputs available over a 16-day period. If observations at view and illumination angles other than nadir are required then the MCD43B1 models should be used directly in the BRDF Forward Model. The MCD43B4 NBAR quantities are provided as a level-3 gridded product in the Sinusoidal projection.
Both Terra and Aqua data are used in the generation of this product, providing the highest probability for quality input data and designating it as an "MCD," meaning "Combined," product.
Version-5 MODIS/Terra+Aqua BRDF/Albedo products are Validated Stage 1, meaning that accuracy has been estimated using a small number of independent measurements obtained from selected locations and time periods and ground-truth/field program efforts. Although there may be later improved versions, these data are ready for use in scientific publications.
