Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage To Announce Key Partnership in Continued Rebuilding of Afghanistan

Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage will announce the re-establishment of the Fulbright Program with Afghanistan in a ceremony on Thursday, May 1, 2003 from 10:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., in the Treaty Room at the U.S. Department of State. The program’s reactivation signifies the U.S. commitment to rebuilding once vibrant bilateral relations in education and culture, and acknowledges Afghanistan’s resurgence as a full partner in that realm.
 
His Excellency Ishaq Shahryar, Ambassador of Afghanistan to the United States, is expected to participate in the ceremony. Other diplomats from the region, representatives from universities and selected nonprofit educational organizations, and other individuals interested in U.S.-Afghan relations will attend.
 
Media representatives are invited to cover the ceremony.

Pre-set time for cameras is 10:15 a.m. from the 23rd Street Entrance.
Final access time for press is 10:30 a.m. from the 23rd Street Entrance.

Media representatives may cover this event upon presentation of one of the following: (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center); (2) a photo ID issued by the employing media organization; or (3) a letter on official letterhead from their employing news organization verifying their employment as journalists, accompanied by an official photo ID (driver's license or passport).
