Abstract : Aquatic macroinvertebrate monitoring is designed to provide data on the health of Park streams, as a continuing inventory of the aquatic biodiversity of the Park, and to determine correlations among macroinvertebrates, fish, and water quality. Macroinvertebrates are the insects, crayfish, worms, and other large (>1 mm) invertebrates that live in streams. Sampling is conducted at 25 permanent monitoring sites annually to permit comparisons of the health of these sites from year to year. Another 15 sites are sampled on a rotating basis each year to provide wider coverage of Park streams. With more than 3,400 kilometers (2,100 miles) of streams in the Park, complete coverage is a long-term objective.
