Discussion of Federal Site Z in Zone Maps

What is the zone number for Federal Site Z?

Zone numbers are no longer applicable to federally operated, federally funded, or federally insured structures. Since about 1980, the federal building code maps have been based on two ground-motion contour maps, one relating to long period ground motions, one to short period. The code standards have been re-written to reflect this, but also occasionally refer to the older zonations for comparison. The maps of the 1997 version of these standards are based on the 2 percent 0.2 sec and 1.0 sec maps of this site.

The code applicable for Federal sites is the FEMA National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program (NEHRP) standards: Recommended provisions for seismic construction for new buildings. Maps and provisions can be obtained at BSSC, 1201 L. St. NW, Washington DC 20005 or (202) 289-7800.
