FTP Server Log-in Freguently Asked Question (FAQ)

I am having problems logging into your FTP site. Is this my problem or yours?

If we had a server problem, then other parts of the site wouldn't work either.

Occasionally, but more seriously, the following is the reason for such a problem:

When you attempt to login to our FTP site, our system compares your server's IP number and domain name with the domain name and IP number given by querying a look-up utility. Your login request is not accepted if

a) the IP number of your server does have a known domain name or

b) the domain name of your server does not correspond to the domain name given by the IP number lookup utility.

We do not allow access under these conditions, because fake IP numbers and domain names are a common means for hackers to achieve anonymous access to our system.

You should be speaking to your system administrator or Internet Service Provider (ISP) for a solution. Your server is not configured properly--the problem may lie either with a "broken" domain name server, or your computer is located behind an improperly configured firewall. There may be other explanations.
