How is USGS implementing SDTS?

The U.S. Geological Survey, as the FIPS 173 maintenance agency, has taken the lead in converting its digital cartographic data holdings to SDTS format . For the next couple of years, the USGS will offer all SDTS formatted data FREE via the Internet.

Data holdings that conform to the Topological Vector Profile, the first profile developed and approved for FIPS 173, are the first to be converted.

Please note that not all datasets were available at the time of the mass conversions but will be available at a later date.

The Large-Scale DLG data are now available. These DLG data files are derived from USGS topographic maps published as 7.5-minute quadrangles at 1:24,000 or 1:25,000-scale. Where 7.5-minute coverage was not available, other sources were used.

The Large-Scale DLG data are sold in nine layers, including: Public Land Survey System (PLSS), boundaries, transportation, hydrography, hypsography, surface cover, non-vegetative surface features, survey control and markers, and manmade or cultural features.

1:100,000 scale Digital Line Graph (DLG) data have been converted to SDTS format. This includes national coverage of the hydrography and transportation overlays, and less complete coverage of other layers.

The 1:2,000,000 scale DLG data were revised in 1995 and are now available in SDTS format. This includes coverage of the individual conterminous United States for the following categories of data: hydrography, transportation, boundaries, Public Land Survey System, and man-made features.

Once a Raster Profile is available all USGS data holdings that conform to this profile will be converted, including Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles (DOQ). At this time, it is impossible to confidently predict DEM availability. Once mass conversion starts it will take approximately six months to do the conversion of DEMs to the SDTS Raster Profile, and then it will take 2 months to stage and coordinate publ ic release of the data at the USGS Geodata site. The two tasks will overlap as much as possible with small releases of DEMs as they are completed. The plan is still to start with the 7.5-minute DEMs, and follow with the other series.

The USGS SDTS data currently available can be found at the US GEODATA website at EROS Data Center.

The USGS also has sample datasets available, including DLG-3, DLG-E, GRASS, TIGER, DEM, DOQ, and a multi-spectral image at the SDTS ftp site.
