Metals in Basinal Brines and Petroleum
Project Objectives
The objectives of this study are to improve understanding of (1) the sources of metals and nutrients in sedimentary
basins, (2) the controls on their incorporation into brine and petroleum, (3) their mechanisms of deposition on the sea
floor, (4) their effects on aquatic life in the basins, (5) and their fate in the environment during mineral and petroleum
resource exploitation. These goals will be accomplished through the following integrated tasks; Task 1: Studies of ancient
ore deposits, secondary minerals in oil reservoirs, and fluid inclusions; Task 2: Laboratory experiments on metal
partitioning between rock, oil, water, and gas; Task 3: Chemical modeling; Task 4: Studies of modern basin brines,
petroleum, and sea floor vents; and Task 5: Metals, fluid flow, petroleum, and microbes in sedimentary basins:
Investigations of modern analogs.
