Abstract: The National Longitudinal Surveys (NLS), sponsored and directed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, gather detailed information about the labor market experiences and other aspects of the lives of six groups of men and women. The surveys include data about a wide range of events such as schooling and career transitions, marriage and fertility, training investments, child-care usage, and drug and alcohol use.

Purpose: The depth and breadth of each survey allow for analysis of an expansive variety of topics, including the transition from school to work, job mobility, youth unemployment, educational attainment and the returns to education, welfare recipiency, the impact of training, and retirement decisions.

Agency Program: 29 U.S.C. 1, 2, 1501, 1752; 13 U.S.C. 182; 22 U.S.C. 3101, 3141 Statutory Requirements Met by the Programs: The Bureau of Labor Statistics "shall acquire and diffuse among the people of the United States useful information on subjects connected with labor, in the most general and comprehensive sense of that word, and especially upon its relation to capital" (29 U.S.C. 1). The Bureau of Labor Statistics shall collect, collate, report and publish full and complete statistics of the volume of and changes in employment (29 U.S.C. 2).
