components: a Host Computer Facility, a Microcomputer Facility, and a Hub
Communications Facility. The IMIS Host Computer Facility supports a National
consolidated database system for collecting, manipulating, maintaining, and
retrieving enforcement, consultation, and discrimination data. The National
database contains a variety of information, including inspection history for
specific establishments, citations issued, penalties assessed and paid,
accidents and injuries, standards cited, complaints received and investigated,
referrals, cases contested, State Programs activities, Federal Agency Programs
activities, consultation visits, and discrimination investigations. Currently,
IMIS information is provided to the Public primarily in hardcopy format or on
other media, such as disk or tape. In addition, several IMIS applications are
available on the OSHA Internet World Wide Web (www) Site. They are:
1)Establishment Search; 2)Frequently Cited OSHA Standards; 3)Industry Profile
for an OSHA Standard; 4)Inspection Information; 5)Accident Investigation
Search; 6)Recordkeeping; 7)SIC Manual; 8)Seach Inspections by SIC; 9)BLS
Workplace Injury and Illness Statistics; 10)Federal Agency Injury and Illness
Statistics for FY 1998. The URL is

Purpose: The IMIS was created to satsify the automated data
processing (ADP) resources requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) in accordance with the OSH Act of 1970 (P.L. 91-596).
OSHA relies primarily on its Integrated Management Information System (IMIS)
for planning, managing, tracking, and reporting on its programs, services, and
assistance. Agency Program: The National database is used by
top-level management for program planning and evaluation, tracking trends,
developing and tracking performance measures, providing aggregated information
to the Congress for budgetary and oversight purposes, reporting information
regarding catastrophes and other significant events, and responding to Freedom
of Information Act (FOIA) requests from the Public regarding specific
establishments or situaitons, or summarized data that can be selected and
sorted by a wide array of criteria. Field Office management uses the local
database, and when necessary, the national database, to access the information
necessary to meet statute requirements, such as complaint response time, to
target high-hazard establishments, to run daily office operations, to respond
to requests for information from Regional and National Offices, and to provide
information to unions, public interest groups, universities, safety and health
product manufacturers, and to the public citizen. Compliance and consultation
professionals use IMIS information, such as history on specific establishments
and industries, results of inspections, visits, and other interventions, to
prepare for inspections and to make the most effective use of their time.
