Abstract: The card catalog
of the Wirtz Labor Library comprises identifying bibliographic records in print/card for
Library holdings in all media and formats. Access is provided by author, title and
keyword and each record includes descriptive information relative to medium, format,
location and other identifying characteristics. Coverage is comprehensive for Library
holdings of imprints &/or acquisition dates prior to 1975. The card catalog is
supplemented by the post-1975 electronic catalog and together they comprise the Wirtz
Labor Library’s catalog of holdings. Select items and select segments of the card
catalog are replicated in the electronic online catalog. Final additions to the card
catalog were made in January 1975; however records are withdrawn or revised upon
occasion. The card catalog is located on the premises of the Wirtz Labor Library and can
be used only on-site.
Purpose: The online catalog provides access to the
pre-1975 holdings of the Wirtz Labor Library. Catalog records provide descriptive as well
as access information documented in accordance with prescribed standards. The card
catalog along with the online electronic catalog (largely comprised of post-1975
holdings) collectively comprise the Wirtz Labor Library’s primary collection
management tool. The card catalog serves as an access tool to DOL officers and staff and
to Library users outside the Department.
