Abstract: The integrated
library system (ILS) of the Wirtz Labor Library is a computer application which
provides specialized access to the online catalog of the Wirtz Labor Library.
The application, Stilas, is a product of the Sirsi Corporation of Huntsville,
Alabama. The ILS allows Library staff the ability to track the Library’s
holdings, accession materials as they are added to the collection, and perform
the cataloging work necessary to keep the online catalog current and accurately
representative of the Library’s holdings. Access to the Library’s
catalog records is provided by author, title and subject keyword and each
record includes descriptive information relative to medium, format, location
and other identifying characteristics. The three main components of the ILS are
the circulation module, the serials check-in module, and the cataloging module.
The circulation module allows materials from the Library’s collection to
be circulated to DOL and interlibrary loan users, tracks user profiles, and
issues overdue notices. The serials check-in module allows serial publications
(journals, magazines, etc.) to be checked upon receipt, subscriptions tracked,
and missing issues claimed from publishers. It also allows users who access the
online catalog to see what issues of any given publication are held. The
cataloging module allows the Library’s cataloging staff to enter, edit,
delete, and otherwise modify catalog records of materials held and accessioned
by the Wirtz Labor Library, so that the online catalog is an accurate
representation of the Library’s holdings.
Purpose: The
integrated library system of the Wirtz Labor Library allows the Library’s
online catalog to be continuously updated. This will reflect accurately the
status of Library materials.
Agency Program: The integrated
library system of the Wirtz Labor Library supports all DOL agencies by
maintaining the accuracy of access information provided through the
Library’s online catalog.
