Occupational Outlook publishes information on a variety of topics. Two
well-known publications are the "Occupational Outlook Handbook" and the "Career
Guide to Industries". Topics covered in these publications include demographic
characteristics of workers, educational attainment statistics, employment
trends, job market experience and earnings of college graduates, employment
outlook for occupations, job search aides, labor force trends, new and emerging
occupations, occupational research findings, salary trends, training
opportunities, and unusual occupations. Purpose: The
information developed is used in career guidance, education planning and policy
formulation. This information is published in the Occupational Outlook
Handbook, Occupational Outlook Quarterly, and the Monthly Labor Review.
Agency Program: 29 U.S.C. 1, 2, 1501, 1752 Statutory Requirements
Met by the Program: The Bureau of Labor Statistics shall acquire and diffuse
among the people of the United States useful information on subjects connected
with labor, especially upon its relation to capital (29 U.S.C. 1). The Job
Training Partnership Act directs the Secretary of Labor to maintain a
comprehensive system of labor market information a National, regional, State,
local, or other appropriate basis (PL 97-300, Section 461). The Job Training
Partnership Act directs the Secretary of Labor to develop current employment
data by occupation and industry, based on the BLS occupational employment
statistics program and projections by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of
employment and openings by occupation (PL 97-300, Section 462).
