Chandeleur Islands Offshore Mapping

Summary:

This phase of the seafloor mapping study will focus on mapping the seaward side of the Chandeleur Islands between a distance of approximately 2 km to 10 km offshore. High-resolution seismic data, swath bathymetry, and sidescan sonar imagery will be collected on a 1 km grid of lines. The seismic data will be used to map the shallow stratigraphy which will be complimented by coring at a later time. The bathymetry and sidescan sonar imagery will provide the basis for sediment transport and future modelling studies.

Investigators:

Principal: David C. Twichell (dtwichell@usgs.gov)

Objectives:

The objective of this offshore mapping is to provide baseline bathymetric and shallow stratigraphic data to improve the understanding of the platform upon which the island chain rests and the processes shaping the sea floor.
