On Friday, December 14, 2001 the Office of International Religious Freedom will present a roundtable on Religious Reconciliation and Tolerance in Afghanistan, 9:15-10:45 a.m. in Room 1107, State Department. The event, taking place during Human Rights Week, highlights the U.S. policy of promoting religious freedom for all.

Under Secretary for Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky will welcome the participants. Roundtable speakers will be Dr. Richard D. Land (Southern Baptist Convention); Professor Sulayman S. Nyang (Howard University); Professor Uma A. Saini (American University); and Rabbi Arnold E. Resnicoff (The American Jewish Committee).

These representatives of four religious faiths—Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Judaism—will apply the teachings of their respective religious traditions to rebuilding civil society in Afghanistan. Questions and discussion follow the presentations.

Under Secretary Dobriansky's remarks will be open to the press. Questions from the press will not be taken. Press may quietly break down equipment following the conclusion of the remarks or remain for the balance of the panel.
