Government Oversight

Q: My agency's IG is knowledgeable about the issues facing our particular programs and operations. How does the IG gain a government-wide perspective?

A: Depending on how the IG is appointed, each IG is a member of either the President's Council on Integrity and Efficiency (PCIE) for PAS IGs, or the Executive Council on Integrity and Efficiency (ECIE) for agency-appointed IGs. These Councils coordinate and enhance government-wide efforts to promote integrity and efficiency and to detect and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse in Federal programs. The mission of the PCIE and ECIE is to:

  • Address integrity, economy, and effectiveness issues that transcend individual Government agencies, and
  • Increase the professionalism and effectiveness of IG personnel throughout the Government.

Ongoing projects with government-wide implications include the reviews of agencies' critical infrastructure protection of cyber and physical assets, improper payments, and social security numbers use.
