Internship Opportunities

Help Make a Difference! Support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service by assisting in the conservation of our public lands and the protection of our natural wildlife resources and their habitat!

The Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge Complex offers unique full-time internship opportunities for students seeking a more formal experience working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Types of Internships Available:

The Chassahowitzka NWR Complex offers two categories of full-time internships:

Introduction to Fish and Wildlife Service Operations:

This internship provides students with an opportunity to work side-by-side with Service professionals, performing a variety of operations such as natural resource management, visitor services, environmental education, and maintenance. This internship will provide working experience with the Service at the GS-5 equivalent level.

Goal or Project Specific:

This type of internship requires that the intern candidate work on a specific goal or project that meets the following criteria:

  • Must be a requirement for the student's course-curriculum and be coordinated in conjunction with the college or university.
  • Must benefit the Service and/or the Chassahowitzka NWR Complex.

Students wishing to pursue this internship must have their course advisor/counselor contact the refuge management prior to entering into any internship agreement(s).

Schedule and Stripend:

Interns should plan to commit to a specific period of time, no less than 30 days and no more than 120 days, unless approved by the Refuge Manager. Interns will work a schedule of five consecutive eight-hour days for a total of 40 hours per work week. A $10/work day stipend may be available on a biweekly basis.

Housing:

The Refuge has two 30' trailers, which are available for intern use. These trailers are complete with gas stove, refrigerator, microwave oven, full-bath, queen size bed and two bunk beds. Interns are responsible for cleaning the trailer and getting “check out” before completion of their internship. Laundry facilities are located on site in a separate shed.
