North Carolina Implements "Tough New Accountability Measures" and Receives "Millions of New Federal Dollars"
On Friday, North Carolina became the 12th state to have its No Child Left Behind state accountability plan approved by the U.S. Department of Education. Following are excerpts from coverage of the announcement:
"Federal educational leaders are confirming what state officials have been saying all along[:] North Carolina is ready to tackle new federal requirements under the No Child Left Behind Legislation. U.S. Under Secretary of Education Eugene Hickok delivered the news to State Superintendent Mike Ward [that] the state's plan to implement No Child Left Behind requirements got the go-ahead. 'N.C. has been a leader on accountability for some time,' said Hickok. 'They had some tough things to get done under this new law and they've accomplished it.'"
