State Department to Welcome UNIVISION's News Anchor Marma Elena Salinas for Women's History Month ProgramThe Department of State’s Office of Civil Rights will host news anchor María Elena Salinas as part of the Department’s celebration of Women’s History Month. Ms. Salinas, the Emmy-award winning anchor of the highly rated Spanish-language television network's nightly newscast "Noticiero UNIVISION,” will deliver remarks on Monday, March 22, from 12-12:45 p.m. The presentation will be held at the Dean Acheson Auditorium located in the Department of State Harry S Truman Building, 2201 C St., N.W, Washington, DC.
Ms. Salinas’ presentation will be on the 2004 National Women’s History Month theme: “Women Inspiring Hope and Possibility.”
Ms. Salinas is the most recognized Hispanic female journalist in the United States. For more than 20 years, she has handled some of the most challenging assignments in modern day journalism and reached an audience of millions of Hispanics across the United States and Latin America. Throughout the years, Ms. Salinas has interviewed more world leaders, dictators and political figures than any other female journalist. She has interviewed nearly every U.S. President since Jimmy Carter and covered a dozen trips by Pope John Paul II. Salinas has reported from the White House to the Kremlin, from the O.J. Simpson trial in Los Angeles to the funeral of Princess Diana in London, and from earthquake-ravaged El Salvador to the war-torn streets of Baghdad. Invited guests include students from Wakefield High School in Arlington County, Virginia, and members of the diplomatic community.
Other events the State Department has coordinated to commemorate Women’s History Month include a presentation by NBC’s News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell; a Mentoring Session for Department employees with Assistant Secretaries of State A. Elizabeth Jones, Maura A. Harty and Paula A. DeSutter; and the screening of the film “Osama,” a story of a girl who disguises herself as a boy to support her family in Taliban’s Afghanistan.
