Increasing Expectations: The Lawrence Intermediate School's Approach To Special Education Students And AYP
As reported in the Lawrence Ledger, the Lawrence Intermediate School (LIS) in New Jersey did not make adequate yearly progress under No Child Left Behind as "[s]tudents in the 4th grade at LIS who have been classified as needing special education did not meet the [state] standards in mathematics or language arts and literacy."
So what is the school's response? They're raising their expectations for students with disabilities.
The paper reports: "To remedy the situation, [Assistant Superintendent Dr. Bruce McGraw] said, school district officials plan to raise their expectations for children's performance in mathematics and language arts and literacy."
Dr. McGraw is quoted as stating: "We can do it, we think, through increasing expectations in the students' Individual Education Plan and by improving the quality of the Individual Education Plan." The complete text of the Lawrence Ledger's article can be found online.
