At this time of budgetary constraints throughout the federal government, FOIA training programs will not be unaffected.
For the past four years, most governmentwide FOIA training has been conducted by the Office of Information and Privacy under the auspices of the Justice Department's Legal Education Institute. However, due to sudden budget cutbacks, the Legal Education Institute has sharply curtailed those FOIA training seminars for the immediately foreseeable future.
Consequently, the Office of Information and Privacy has undertaken to provide governmentwide FOIA training directly, using its own resources. These programs will be coordinated by OIP's training officer, senior attorney Phyllis L. Hubbell, and will be provided at no cost at available locations in the Washington, D.C. area.
The first such OIP training session will be the Advanced FOIA Seminar, for which registration is limited to 40-45 participants. It will be held on June 4, 1986, at the Department of Labor Headquarters Building in Washington, D.C. An introductory FOIA seminar as well as a new "Update" training session are also planned to be held in the same location before the end of the summer.
Additionally, in light of the Legal Education Institute's extraordinary constraints at this time, OIP attorneys will be providing specialized FOIA training to individual agencies upon request.
