Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has set ambitious long-term goals that directly link to the Department of Transportation's long-term goal to reduce passenger vehicle occupant fatalities. For example, the program has established a long-term measure to reduce the passenger vehicle occupant fatality rate to 1.0 by 2008.
  • The Department has not reached its annual performance goal for reducing highway fatalities; however, the overall rate of fatalities reached the lowest ever in 2004.
  • The program recently implemented a systematic review of all of its current Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards over a seven-year period. This will help the program ensure that its regulations are up-to-date and eliminate any weaknesses in its rules.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Implementing the Motorcycle Safety Program Plan to identify methods and strategies for improving motorcycle safety.
  • Ensuring that Department of Transportation has timely and accurate fatalities statistics based on fatality data analysis.
