The following excerpt is from a recent article in the Walker County Messenger (GA) highlighting four schools in Walker County, Georgia that were honored by the Georgia Department of Education for meeting state academic standards three years in a row:
"Four schools in Walker County are among the 150 schools that earned honors from the Georgia Department of Education for achieving high performance standards. Chattanooga Valley, Naomi and Stone Creek elementary schools have all achieved adequate yearly progress, or AYP, for three years in a row, according to a state report. Chickamauga Elementary School has also earned AYP for three consecutive years.
"Chickamauga Elementary Principal Nancy Gurganis credited her students and faculty for the achievement. She hopes the cycle continues.
"‘Those schools have initiatives in place that help them achieve AYP,’ said Regina Bacon, Title I coordinator for the county schools. ‘For example, Stone Creek has a Comprehensive School Reform grant they have been implementing that helped them achieve at this level.’
"This year, the schools will receive a certificate recognizing their achievement. If the trend continues, the schools may be eligible for state grants."
