The following are excerpts from an article in yesterdays Rockdale Citizen (GA) highlighting a local school that was recently recognized by the Georgia Department of Education as a Title I Distinguished School:
"Hicks Elementary School is among the Georgia Department of Educations (DOE) recently named Title I Distinguished Schools for 2004-05. The DOEs Title I Recognition and Distinguished Schools program honors Title I elementary and secondary schools that make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) three or more consecutive years.
"I am excited to learn of this award for Hicks Elementary School, said Ruel Parker, Rockdale County Public Schools (RCPS) superintendent. The faculty at Hicks has long made strong efforts to meet the needs of its students as is evidenced by this recognition. This achievement reflects very positively on the entire faculty and leadership at Hicks, both now and in previous years.
"Hicks joins 150 Title I schools in the state which have made AYP for three consecutive years. The school will receive a certificate of recognition from the DOE and is one year away from a monetary reward. With four or more consecutive years of AYP, Title I schools receive grant money from the state. This year, 100 schools qualified for more than $3 million in grants, the DOE reports."
"Though Hicks was the only school recognized for three years of AYP success, all 17 county schools, Title I and non-Title I, made AYP last year. All of our Title I schools made AYP last year, Parker said. So the entire school system is obviously emphasizing the fundamentals of learning, which benefits all students. I look forward to future recognitions for Hicks Elementary and our other schools, as well."
