U.S.-Canada Yukon River Salmon Agreement

The U.S. Department of State will host a ceremony to sign the U.S.-Canada Yukon River Salmon Agreement on Wednesday, December 4, 2002. Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky and Canadian Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Robert Thibault will sign for their respective countries. The ceremony will take place from 11AM to 11:30 AM, with a reception following until 12 Noon in the Department of State Treaty Room.

The signing of the U.S.-Canada Yukon River Salmon Agreement brings to a successful conclusion 16 years of negotiations. The Agreement establishes a fisheries management regime that addresses conservation and catch share allocation of the shared Yukon River salmon stocks. It also creates a Yukon River Salmon Restoration and Enhancement Fund for projects to restore the health of Yukon salmon runs.

Press should arrive at the 23rd Street Entrance to the building by 10:30. This will be a photo opportunity only, no briefing or questions taken.

Media representatives may attend this event upon presentation of either (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a photo ID issued by the employing media organization, or (3) a letter on official letterhead from their news organization verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo ID (drivers’ license or passport).

Released on December 2, 2002
