U.S. Contributes Additional $110.3 Million to the United Nations High Commissioner for RefugeesWe are pleased to announce recent additional U.S. contributions of approximately $110.3 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The money will fund relief programs for refugees and other displaced people around the world, including in Darfur, countries in the Great Lakes region of Africa, Colombia, the Thai-Burma border, and many other areas.
The Geneva-based UN refugee agency offers legal protection and critical life-sustaining assistance, as well as return and reintegration support, to millions worldwide. Food, shelter, water, sanitation, medical care, and education are the types of services UNHCR provides to refugees, internally displaced persons, stateless people, victims of conflict and other people of concern throughout the world.
This contribution brings U.S. Government support to UNHCR in this fiscal year to $354.2 million.
The United States is the largest single donor to UNHCR.
