More than 200 teachers participated in a U.S. Department of Education Teacher Workshop in Portland, Ore. on June 28-30. They learned the latest effective practices and research-based methods to raise student achievement and close the achievement gap.

"Effective teachers are the key to fulfilling the promise of the No Child Left Behind Act," said U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige. "The Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative will highlight real-world examples of how these teachers translate education research into practices that work in the classroom. Teachers are the true heroes of education, and we are pleased to be able to facilitate this exchange of information to help teachers and, ultimately, students."

Education researchers and teachers finding success in closing the achievement gap provided training at the workshops that focused on making data-driven decisions, raising student achievement, creating effective strategies in reading and math, and working with special populations.

President Bush and Congress provided an unprecedented $16.1 billion in federal funding since 2001 to support the teaching profession. The U.S. Department of Education and Secretary Paige are committed to building upon teachers' success by listening to and learning from educators through the Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative. The initiative includes the summer workshops, teacher roundtables, a Research-to-Practice Teacher Summit in July, "Toolkits for Teachers" and resource materials, and the weekly e-mail update "Teacher E-Bytes."

Some of the teachers who participated in the June 28-30 workshop are listed below.
