The White House Office of the Press Secretary today issued the following:

The President intends to nominate Susan B. Neuman to be Assistant Secretary of Education for Elementary and Secondary Education. She is currently a Professor and Director of the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement at the University of Michigan and in the past has taught at Temple University, Boston College, the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and Yale University. She is a graduate of American University, has a Master's degree from California State University and her Doctorate from the University of the Pacific.
Regarding the selection, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige said, "Susan Neuman will be an important addition to a team that will be working to implement President Bush's bold education reform plan. He has given the Department of Education a prominent role in his administration and an important charge for our public elementary and secondary schools. Susan will be working closely with me on making sure that we deliver on his promise to leave no child behind."
