ARS researchers search for wild chocolate trees and biocontrol organisms in Peru.
Researchers from SPCL and Peruvian collaborators explored several river basins in the Upper Amazon region in Peru during July 11-25 to search for new sources of wild chocolate trees, mycological endophytes and fungal pathogens of chocolate. Participants included
Lyndel Meinhardt and Dapeng Zhang from SPCL and Gary Samuels from Systematic Mycology and Microbiology Laboratory. The trip combined the research objectives of conserving endangered plant material, finding new resistant trees for chocolate breeding programs, identifying new biological control organisms and understanding the diversity of fungal pathogens of chocolate.

Fernando E. Vega from SPCL had a feature article in the March-April issue of America Scientist magazine titled, "The Rise of Coffee"
