DOL-DOE Traveling Resource Center to Assist Current and Former Nuclear Weapons Workers in La Jolla-San Diego Area

SAN FRANCISCO — A joint U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Traveling Resource Center will be in the San Diego area the week of January 26th. Representatives will be on hand to assist individuals with claims under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA).

The EEOICPA became effective July 31, 2001 and provides two different types of assistance. DOL administers the program that provides for a lump sum compensation amount of $150,000 and payment of medical expenses for current and former DOE employees and DOE contractor employees who became ill as a result of their exposure to radiation, beryllium or silica. Covered conditions include radiogenic cancers, beryllium diseases and chronic silicosis. Qualified survivors of deceased covered employees may also be eligible for the lump sum compensation amount of $150,000.

The DOE program helps DOE contractor employees apply for state workers compensation benefits if it is determined by an independent physicians panel that the worker sustained an illness because of exposure to a toxic substance at a DOE facility. Benefits for successful claimants vary from state to state, but are generally a portion of lost wages plus reimbursement of medical costs.

The San Diego-La Jolla area is home to General Atomics, also known as a division of General Dynamics or the John Jay Hopkins Laboratory for Pure and Applied Science. These companies worked with the Atomic Energy Commission or the Department of Energy (DOE) as either an atomic weapons employer from 1960 through 1969, a beryllium vendor from 1959 through 1967, or with the Department of Energys remediation clean up program from 1996 through 1999.

Workers who need help filling out claim forms can schedule appointments at the Traveling Resource Center by calling, toll-free, 1-866-697-0841, or visit the site during the hours listed below.
