DOL-DOE Traveling Resource Center to Assist Nuclear Weapons Workers in Colorado October 29 30

GRAND JUNCTION — A joint U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and Department of Energy (DOE) claims assistance staff will visit Colorados Western Slope October 29 30 to provide information and assist claimants with filing claims under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA).

The EEOICPA, which became effective July 31, 2001 and is administered by the DOL, provides for a lump sum compensation amount of $150,000 and payments of medical benefits to current and former employees of DOE, contractors and subcontractors to DOE, employees of atomic weapon employers (AWE) and employees of designated beryllium vendors. Qualified survivors of covered employees, including adult children, also are eligible for benefits. Specific illnesses covered by the EEOICPA are radiogenic cancers, beryllium diseases and chronic silicosis.

Workers or their eligible survivors, who have been awarded compensation under Section 5 of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), are entitled to receive an additional payment of $50,000 and medical expenses for the covered illness from the date of the claim.

Colorado is home to nine facilities listed by the U.S. Department of Energy as nuclear weapons producers: Coors Porcelain, Grand Junction Operations Office, Project Rio Blanco Nuclear Explosion Site, Project Rulison Nuclear Explosion Site, Rocky Flats Plant, Shattuck Chemical, the University of Denver Research Institute, Uranium Mill in Durango and Green Sludge Plant in Uravan.
