Directions from Baltimore

1. Take I-695 to I-95 (South) to I-495 and on I-495 proceed West toward Silver Spring.
2. Continue on I-495 to Exit 34, Route 355 North to Rockville.
3. Stay in the exit lane and follow the signs to Route 355 South (Bethesda), also known as Rockville Pike/Wisconsin Avenue.
4. Continue south about 2 miles and turn right at South Drive onto the NIH campus.
5. Join the security line for visitors on the right to undergo a security check and obtain visitor badges for everyone in the vehicle. (See security procedure for details.)
6. Exit the security check area, continue down South Drive and enter through the NIH gate.
7. Proceed to the stop at the intersection and make a left onto Center Drive.
8. Proceed until you come to the NLM, Building 38, on the right.

Directions from Frederick

1. Take I-270 (South) toward Washington and I-495.
2. Where I-270 and I-495 split, follow the signs to I-495. Take the exit for 355 South (Bethesda) onto Rockville Pike/Wisconsin Avenue.
3. Continue south about 2 miles and turn right at South Drive onto the NIH campus.
4. Join the security line for visitors on the right to undergo a security check and obtain visitor badges for everyone in the vehicle. (See security procedure for details.)
5. Exit the security check area, continue down South Drive and enter through the NIH gate.
6. Proceed to the stop at the intersection and make a left onto Center Drive.
7. Proceed until you come to the NLM, Building 38, on the right.

Directions from Virginia

1. Take I-95 North to I-495.
2. Proceed on I-495 in the direction marked "Tyson's Corner" (West).
3. Stay on I-495 and take the exit for 355 South (Bethesda) onto Rockville Pike/Wisconsin Avenue.
4. Continue south about 2 miles and turn right at South Drive onto the NIH campus.
5. Join the security line for visitors on the right to undergo a security check and obtain visitor badges for everyone in the vehicle. (See security procedure for details.)
6. Exit the security check area, continue down South Drive and enter through the NIH gate.
7. Proceed to the stop at the intersection and make a left onto Center Drive.
8. Proceed until you come to the NLM, Building 38, on the right.

Directions from Washington, DC

1. Proceed north from the District on Wisconsin Avenue (Rt. 355) to the intersection of South Drive and Rockville Pike.
2. Turn left at South Drive onto the NIH campus.
3. Join the security line for visitors on the right to undergo a security check and obtain visitor badges for everyone in the vehicle. (See security procedure for details.)
4. Exit the security check area, continue down South Drive and enter through the NIH gate.
5. Proceed to the stop at the intersection and make a left onto Center Drive.
6. Proceed until you come to the NLM, Building 38, on the right.
7. Parking may be arranged for pre–arranged tour groups.

Parking information

1. Metered parking (coins are required) is available in front of the Library building for $0.50 per 15 minutes with a maximum of $6 for 3 hours.
2. Change for parking is available from change machines in the Library's lobby.
3. Handicapped visitor parking (free) is available at the north side lot next to the NLM building near the handicapped ramp.
4. An attended visitor parking lot is available across Center Drive from the Library, adjacent to the Natcher Building, Building 45, for $2 per hour, with a maximum of $12 per day.
5. Parking fees are in effect from 7 am to 7 pm Monday through Friday, excluding Federal holidays.

By metro

We encourage visitors to use Metrorail or Metrobus service.

1. Take Metro's Red Line to the Medical Center Station (visit the Metro Web site for information on fares and schedules: http://www.wmata.com/tripplanner/maps.cfm).
2. Upon exiting the escalator, proceed to the Visitor Gateway Center where you will undergo a security check and receive a visitor badge.
3. As you exit the Center, follow signs for the "National Library of Medicine, Bldg. 38" on a walking path on the right of the Center. Library is about 10 minute walk from the NIH Visitor Gateway Center.
4. You may take the "Campus Limited" shuttle bus (schedule) to its first stop (bldg. 45) and walk to the Library located across the street and to the left.
