Wage and Hour Division Provides Compliance Information to New Orleans Workers

NEW ORLEANS — Over the course of the summer, the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division will be available on two days each week at the Good News Camp to provide compliance information to workers and to answer wage and hour-related questions. Bilingual investigators will be available to assist Spanish-speaking individuals.

"Our goal is to reach workers in this area who may not be familiar with or have access to traditional avenues for resolving wage issues," said Barbara Hicks, district director for Wage and Hour's New Orleans office. "So many of the workers who are cleaning-up and repairing the city are unfamiliar with the laws that protect them and the remedies that are available to them," she added. "We are committed to ensuring that all workers receive the compensation they are entitled to under the law."

The Good News Camp is located in City Park on Marconi Dr. and City Park Ave. Wage and Hour staff will be available at the camp on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. These compliance assistance sessions will provide information on the laws that apply including minimum wage, prevailing wage and overtime; on how to file a wage complaint with Wage and Hour; and on how employees can record and track their work hours. Wage and Hour investigators will answer any wage-related issues under the laws covered by the agency.

The Wage and Hour Division enforces the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which establishes the federal minimum wage, overtime and youth employment standards; the Davis Bacon Act, which requires the payment of prevailing wages on federally financed construction contracts; and the McNamara O'Hara Service Contract Act (SCA), which requires the payment of prevailing wages on federal service contracts.

For more information about the laws enforced by the Wage and Hour Division, call the Wage Hour New Orleans district office at (504) 457-2332 or (504) 457-6247 or the Department of Labor's toll-free help line at 1-866-4USWAGE (1-866-487-9243). Information is also available on the Internet at www.wagehour.dol.gov.
