INDIANAPOLIS, IN. -- Cincinnati-based Messer Harmon LLC, and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have agreed to form a partnership during the construction of the $150 million Argosy Casino expansion project in Lawrenceberg, Ind., with the goal of providing a safe work environment for all employees on the project. "This agreement provides an opportunity for the partners to come together and demonstrate that we all benefit when management, labor and government dedicate themselves to providing a safe and healthful work environment," said Kenneth Gilbert, OSHA area director in Indianapolis. "We are confident the cooperative effort will help reduce injuries and fatalities." The safety partnership will cover the construction of a new gaming vessel. The primary goal of the partnership is to insure that workdays lost to injury stay below the national average, using frequent jobsite inspections, safety orientation and training for all workers, and requiring all contractors and sub-contractors to have written safety and health programs. OSHA Strategic Partnerships for Worker Safety and Health is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. OSHA's area office in Indianapolis is working on the formation of this partnership. Since its Strategic Partnership Program began in 1998, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has formed more than 410 partnerships impacting over 20,000 employers and one million employees across the United States. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships, and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health. ###
