Roundup Chemical Sampling Information
Glyphosate isopropylamine salt

General Description
    Synonyms: Roundup®; glyphosate; 2-(p-Chlorophenyl)phenylacetyl-1,3-indandione; N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine

    OSHA IMIS Code Number: R106
IMIS Name History: Roundup® prior to 11/13/06

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number: 38641-94-0

Related Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number: 1071-83-6 (glyphosate)

NIOSH, Registry of Toxic Effects (RTECS) Identification Number: MC1080000 (Glyphosate isopropylamine salt); MC1075000 (N-(phosphonomethyl)Glycine)

Chemical Description and Physical Properties: Crystalline solid, very soluble in water.
      molecular formula: C3H9N-C3H8NO5P
      molecular weight: 228.22
      melting point: 184.5°C
Health Factors
Potential symptoms: Eye, skin irritation. INGES ACUTE: Sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; respiratory distress, pulmonary edema, shock (systolic blood pressure <90 mm Hg); low serum bicarbonate, acidosis, hyperkalemia, arrhythmia.

Health Effects: Irritation-Eyes---Marked (HE14), Skin---Mild (HE-16); with acute ingestion, pulmonary edema (HE-11) and renal failure (HE-4).

Affected organs: Eyes, skin, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, kidneys

    Notes:
    1. OSHA does not have a PEL for glyphosate or its isopropylamine salt (Roundup).
    2. Glyphosate is an herbicide that inhibits the synthesis of aromatic amino acids in plants by inhibiting enolpyruvylshikimate phosphate synthase, an enzyme existing only in plants.
    3. Fatal intoxication has occurred from suicidal ingestion of Roundup.
    4. Some of the toxic effects of Roundup may be due to surfactant in its formulations rather than due to glyphosate.
    5. Glyphosate is excreted unchanged in the urine.
