By CAS Number
General Description
    Synonyms: 2,6-diisocyanato-1-methylbenzene; 2,6-TDI

    OSHA IMIS Code Number: T177

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number: 91-08-7

NIOSH, Registry of Toxic Effects (RTECS) Identification Number: CZ6310000

Department of Transportation Regulation Number (49 CFR 172.101) and Guide: 2078 156 [27 KB, PDF]

Chemical Description and Physical Properties: colorless to yellow liquid with a pungent odor - turns to pale yellow on exposure to air.
      molecular formula: C9H6N2O2
      molecular weight: 174.16
      boiling point: 96°C @ 1.5 mm Hg
      melting point: 8°C
Potentially hazardous incompatibilities: This compound reacts violently with water. With limited amounts of water, di-substituted amides are formed; with excess water, 2,4-diaminotoluene is formed. It reacts rapidly with active hydrogen compounds (alcohols, primary and secondary amines and carboxylic acids). It is polymerized rapidly by bases.
Exposure Limits
American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value (TLV): 0.005 ppm, 0.036 mg/m3 TWA; 0.02 ppm, 0.14 mg/m3 STEL; SEN; Appendix A4 - Not Classifiable as a Human Carcinogen
Health Factors
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) carcinogenic classification: Group 2B, possibly carcinogenic to humans

Potential symptoms: Nose, throat irritation; choking, paroxysmal coughing; chest pain; retrosternal soreness; nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain; bronchial spasms; pulmonary edema; wheezing, dyspnea, asthma; conjunctivitis, lacrimation, blurred vision; dermatitis, skin sensitization, pain; (carcinogenic)

    Health Effects: Respiratory sensitization---Asthma (HE9); Dermatitis (HE3); Irritation-Eye, Nose, Throat, Skin---Marked (HE14)

Affected organs: Respiratory system, skin, eyes

Note: OSHA has not set exposure limits for 2,6-TDI, despite reports that workers manufacturing polyurethane foam by the continuous slabstock process (the greatest use of TDIs) are exposed to 1-4 times as much 2,6-TDI as 2,4-TDI

    Date Last Revised: 07/22/2003
