E-Authentication Joint Program Management Team Addresses Industry on Connecting People to Services

Washington, D.C. - Today, the federal government's E-Authentication Joint Program Management team presented an update to more than 220 industry representatives on the federal government’s E-Authentication initiative.

”E-Authentication is key to implementing secure delivery of online government information and services to citizens,” stated Mark Forman, the Office of Management and Budget’s Associate Director for IT and E-Government, “while reducing duplicative investments in security and access control infrastructure.”

&38220;We are committed to beginning the prototype authentication gateway in October 2002,” said Steve Timchak, Program Manager for the E-Authentication Joint Program Management Team at GSA. “Initially the number of users and applications may be limited, at least until the full scalability of the gateway is assured, but ultimately, all Federal agencies with E-Gov processes requiring authentication will be able to use the E-Authentication gateway.”

Citizens will have access to the E-Authentication gateway through FirstGov, the federal government’s gateway to online information, transactions, and services and through direct links to agency applications.

Currently the E-Authentication team is working with managing partners for each of the E-Gov initiatives in developing requirements to accept different authentication solutions. These requirements will be met in a gateway prototype that will be operational October 1, 2002.

GSA is the managing partner for the E-Authentication initiative. Other partners are National Aeronautical Space Administration, Social Security Administration, and the Departments of Defense, Treasury, and Agriculture.
