In 1894, smooth cordgrass arrived in Willapa Bay, Washington, in a shipment of oyster transplants. In the 1970s, cordgrass from Georgia was purposely introduced to Siuslaw Estuary in Oregon to stabilize shorelines and increase vegetative cover.
