Constitutional Referendum in the Democratic Republic of CongoThe United States applauds the Congolese people for their efforts to restore peace and establish democracy as demonstrated by the nationwide vote on Sunday, December 18 for a new constitution. The Congolese have demonstrated their desire to elect their leaders and join the political process by actively and peacefully participating in the referendum.
Logistical difficulties in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are enormous, and we congratulate the Congolese Independent Electoral Commission for its determination to overcome them.
The United States will continue to work with the rest of the international community toward assisting the Democratic Republic of the Congo in their democratic transition.
