Taken Question Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC December 7, 2005 Question Taken at December 6, 2005 Daily Press Briefing China -Arrests of Chinese Dissidents During President's VisitQuestion: Reaction to arrests of Chinese dissidents prior to/during President Bush's visit. What is the status of those arrested? Have we/will we raise this with the Chinese government? Answer: The President and his senior advisors raised our concerns with the Chinese Government about harassment, questioning, and detention of political activists and dissidents prior to and during the President's visit to Beijing. We will continue to do so. These actions undermine progress in establishing a productive dialogue on human rights issues. As we have stated on many occasions, the free flow of information is one of the cornerstones of a stable and prosperous society. We urge the Government of China to release all those detained or imprisoned for the peaceful expression of their views.
