| Press Statement Sean McCormack, Spokesman Washington, DC November 30, 2005 Ecuador's Supreme Court of JusticeThe United States welcomes Ecuador’s re-establishment of its Supreme Court of Justice. This is the culmination of a difficult but rigorous selection process managed by Ecuadorians of goodwill who are committed to strengthening their country’s democratic institutions. The people of Ecuador are the beneficiaries of this transparent and objective selection of new justices for a re-established Court. We salute the principles that guided this process, because we firmly believe that an impartial and independent judiciary is essential for effective democratic governance and economic competitiveness. The United States supported the Organization of American States’ oversight of the selection process. OAS observers Dr. Sonia Picado from Costa Rica and Senator Jose Antonio Viera Gallo from Chile worked closely with other domestic and international observers, including Comunidad Andina, to encourage a positive outcome. All are to be commended for their work. The United States joins Ecuador’s other friends in anticipating further progress in the strengthening of that country’s democratic institutions, including re-composition of an independent Constitutional Tribunal and the appointment of a Comptroller General and Prosecutor General. 2005/1120
