U.S. Department of Labor offers free seminars to Florida farm labor contractors and agricultural employers

Sessions to be held Dec. 3 in Winter Haven, Dec. 4 in Palmetto and Dec. 5 in Lorida

TAMPA, Fla. -- The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division is offering three free training seminars to assist farm labor contractors and agricultural employers with compliance requirements of the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act (MSPA) and section H-2A of the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

Polk County - The first session will be held on Monday, Dec. 3, at the Florida Citrus Building, Nora Mayo Hall, 500 3rd St. NW in Winter Haven, Fla.

Manatee County - The second session will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the Manatee Convention Center, Civic Center, 1 Haben Blvd. in Palmetto, Fla.

Highlands County - The third session will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Lorida Civic Center, 1909 Blessings Ave. in Lorida, Fla.

Each session will begin at 5:30 p.m. EST.

Federal and state representatives will conduct the training – with special emphasis on transportation, housing and registration – to help prevent substandard migrant housing and improve vehicle safety for migrant and agricultural workers. H-2A temporary agricultural nonimmigrant application procedures, compliance requirements and related topics also will be discussed.

The Wage and Hour Division enforces MSPA. The agency also administers the Fair Labor Standards Act, which sets minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping and youth employment standards; the Family and Medical Leave Act; the Davis-Bacon and Service Contract Acts, which govern federal contract prevailing wages; the Employee Polygraph Protection Act; and worker protections provided in several temporary visa programs.

For more information about the seminars, contact Mike Rios at 813-288-1400, ext. 28.
